In the weeks before Killiecrankie, Blair Atholl and its castle at the head of the pass became the Jacobite concentration point. The Atholl Murrays were divided in loyalty — some supported King James, others the government. Jacobite partisans seized the castle from its government-leaning occupants. Its control of the single main route between Highland Perthshire and the south made Blair the essential strategic pivot of the 1689 campaign. The garrison action here allowed Dundee to choose his ground at Killiecrankie with confidence.
