History & Significance

Knoydart — the remote peninsula between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn on the western coast — was among the last areas reached by government pacification columns. MacDonell of Glengarry was the chief clan here and fiercely Jacobite. A government naval and military expedition penetrated Knoydart by landing from boats on Loch Nevis. Glengarry MacDonells who resisted were killed. The cattle — the principal wealth of the clans — were systematically driven off. Those who fought back with musket from the hills were pursued. Knoydart's remoteness had allowed armed Jacobites to shelter there for months after Culloden before the combined naval-military operation brought government authority even into this wilderness.
