History & Significance

After the Battle of Cromdale in May 1690, where government dragoons routed Buchan's Jacobite army in a dawn surprise attack, government forces swept through the Grant country — Strathspey and the lands of the Grant clan. The Grants were predominantly Whig in sympathy and had not joined the Jacobite rising, but their country bordered the Jacobite zone and had sheltered fugitives. Government dragoons pursuing fleeing Jacobite clansmen clashed with armed Grant clansmen who refused to allow the dragoons to treat their territory as hostile. Several skirmishes occurred as the government forces pressed their pursuit beyond the Cromdale battlefield area.
