The Battle

History & Significance

While Magna Carta negotiations were underway at Runnymede, King John strengthened Windsor Castle garrison and gathered mercenaries to resist any baronial attack. Windsor was the royalist strongpoint closest to the Runnymede meeting. John used Windsor as his military base throughout the Runnymede negotiations and the subsequent period. The castle's garrison was a constant threat in the baronial rear during the First Barons War.
