History & Significance

A small Jacobite force under Lord Elcho surprised Hessian troops (German allies fighting for the government) at Keith during the later stages of the '45 rising. One of the few occasions Hessian soldiers engaged Jacobites. A minor action but notable as an example of the guerrilla skirmishing that characterised the campaign's final weeks.
