History & Significance

The Gordon Marquess of Huntly — head of the largest noble family in northeast Scotland — declared for King James and assembled a substantial force at Strathbogie (now Huntly) in September 1715. The Gordons were the backbone of Mar's northeast Scotland recruitment. Minor clashes with government supporters in Banffshire and Aberdeenshire accompanied the muster. Huntly's adhesion brought hundreds of Gordon vassals, tenants and allies to the Jacobite cause, giving Mar's army its largest single contingent.

Forces Involved

c.2,000 Gordon clan and northeast Scotland Jacobites
