History & Significance

During the First Barons' War, Llywelyn the Great exploited the English civil war to capture Brecon Castle and threaten Haverfordwest. Reginald de Braose had switched sides from the baronial cause back to the Crown, provoking Llywelyn's campaign into his lands. These southern campaigns consolidated Llywelyn's overlordship over the lesser Welsh princes and demonstrated that Gwynedd's power now extended effectively to the Marches.
