History & Significance

James Francis Edward Stuart, "the Old Pretender", landed at Peterhead on the Aberdeenshire coast on 22 December 1715. Government ships attempted to intercept his crossing from France but failed. His arrival — delayed by illness and logistics — came far too late to affect the outcome of the rising. Sheriffmuir had been fought six weeks earlier and Preston had already fallen. His presence at Perth gave a brief morale boost before the rising's inevitable collapse.
