The Battle

History & Significance

The Jacobite army captured Carlisle during its advance into England — the last occasion a Scottish army captured an English city. The garrison surrendered after a brief siege. On the retreat from Derby, Carlisle was garrisoned with Jacobite troops under Colonel Francis Townley; they were left to their fate. After Cumberland retook the city, Townley and the other English Jacobites were executed for treason.
