History & Significance

Belvoir Castle — the great Leicestershire stronghold of the Lords Ros — changed hands during the Wars of the Roses. The Ros family were committed Lancastrians and Belvoir was taken by Yorkist forces after Towton. The castle's strategic position commanding the Vale of Belvoir and the routes between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire made it a significant military asset. The civil war siege is one of several Midlands castle operations that are less well-documented than the great pitched battles.
