History & Significance

Inveraray — the seat of the Earls of Argyll and the Campbell clan capital — remained firmly in government hands throughout the 1689 rising. The tenth Earl of Argyll had returned from exile with William of Orange and was a committed government supporter. Jacobite clans from the western Highlands and islands attempted to threaten Campbell territory, but Inveraray's position at the head of Loch Fyne, with access to sea communications, made it defensible. The Campbells' control of Argyll and the western Lowlands was an important counterweight to Jacobite Highland power.
