During his 1644 campaign, Montrose moved through Perthshire and encountered government cavalry patrols. The area around Methven had historical resonance as the site of Bruce defeat in 1306. Montrose used rapid movement and surprise to neutralise government cavalry advantages, picking off isolated patrols before concentrating for major engagements.
