Overview

History & significance

A group of six shielings and tracks on Holwick Scars, 280m west of Hungry Hall is a medieval upland pastoral monument located in Teesdale, County Durham. The site comprises the remains of six stone-built shieling structures arranged across the moorland landscape, together with associated drove tracks and pathways that served seasonal pastoral activity. These shielings date to the medieval period and represent evidence of transhumant pastoralism, whereby livestock were moved to high moorland pastures during summer months. The structures and tracks survive as substantial earthworks and stone foundations that preserve the organisation of a pastoral landscape used for cattle and sheep herding in the upland zones of northern England.
