Abington Motte and Bailey is a medieval fortified earthwork located approximately 1600 metres north of Abington in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The monument consists of a motte, or artificial mound, accompanied by an associated bailey, the defended enclosure typical of motte and bailey castles constructed during the Norman period and medieval centuries. Such fortifications are relatively common throughout Scotland and represent a significant form of military architecture from the 11th to 13th centuries, serving as defensive strongholds for local lords and territorial control. The site's preservation as an earthwork monument demonstrates the development of medieval settlement and fortification patterns in the upper Clyde valley region of Lanarkshire.
