Historic gold workings, Leadhills is a complex of surface and subsurface mining features associated with gold extraction in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. The workings date primarily to the medieval and early modern periods, with evidence of exploitation extending from at least the thirteenth century, though activity intensified significantly during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when gold panning and small-scale mining operations were pursued with renewed vigour. The site comprises numerous bell pits, open trenches, and alluvial workings scattered across the moorland landscape, reflecting the varied techniques employed to recover gold from both hard rock and stream deposits. Leadhills maintained commercial importance as Scotland's principal source of precious metal during this period, and the visible archaeological remains document a sustained extractive industry of national economic significance.
