Watermeetings is a platform settlement situated 450 metres west of Watermeetings in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The site comprises a levelled platform cut into the hillside, a settlement form characteristic of prehistoric and early historic communities in upland Scotland. Such platforms, typically measuring between 15 and 25 metres across, provided level building ground in sloping terrain where natural flat land was scarce. The settlement's location reflects careful site selection, positioning the dwelling on stable ground whilst remaining within reach of water and pasture.
The monument is built upon bedrock of the Shinnel Formation and Glenlee Formation, undifferentiated Ashgill wacke deposited during the Ordovician period. This hard sedimentary stone would have offered a stable foundation, though the wacke's exposed surface presents a challenging terrain for agriculture. The immediate landscape would have supported pastoral rather than arable activity, consistent with upland settlement patterns throughout the medieval and early modern periods.
Watermeetings platform settlement is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM4644. The survival of this earthwork provides rare archaeological evidence of domestic occupation patterns in the upland regions of southern Scotland. Although unexcavated, the platform's physical remains contribute to understanding how communities adapted their settlements to difficult topography.
