Crookedstane is a platform settlement located 1300 metres west of Lanarkshire in Scotland. The site comprises a deliberately levelled or naturally terraced platform typical of prehistoric domestic occupation in upland areas. Such settlements exploit level ground on sloping terrain, providing practical building sites whilst maintaining proximity to grazing land and water sources characteristic of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement patterns in the Scottish Lowlands.
The monument sits on bedrock formed from the Shinnel and Glenlee Formations, Ashgill-period wacke deposits laid down during the Ordovician. This geology produces the rough moorland landscape visible today, with thin, acidic soils typical of southern Scottish uplands. The wacke bedrock would have offered some protection from ground moisture, though inhabitants would have required substantial structures to withstand the exposed conditions.
Crookedstane is protected by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument under reference SM4646. The site survives as an archaeological record of settlement strategies in marginal upland terrain, offering evidence of how prehistoric communities utilised the landscape around what is now Lanarkshire. Further survey or excavation may reveal artefactual evidence of occupation, domestic activity and dating within the platform's stratigraphy.
