Wintercleugh is a bastle house situated approximately one kilometre south of Tomont Hill in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Bastle houses represent a distinctive form of fortified domestic architecture developed in the Anglo-Scottish borders and adjacent regions during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, designed to provide defence against raiding and livestock theft during a period of considerable frontier instability. The structure exemplifies the practical vernacular response of border communities to the threats posed by cross-border incursions and lawlessness that characterised the period before the Union of the Crowns in 1603. The monument is recorded in the national heritage record under the Historic Environment Scotland INSPIRE designation SM5279.
