Wintercleugh is a bastle house situated approximately one kilometre south of Tomont Hill in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Bastle houses represent a distinctive form of fortified domestic architecture developed in the Anglo-Scottish borders and adjacent regions during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, designed to provide defence against raiding and livestock theft during a period of considerable frontier instability. The structure exemplifies the practical vernacular response of border communities to the threats posed by cross-border incursions and lawlessness that characterised the period before the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
