Achavar Broch is an Iron Age fortified roundhouse situated on Middle Old Red Sandstone bedrock north-northwest of Occumster Railway Station in Caithness, Scotland. The underlying geology of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone from the Middle Devonian period would have presented considerable challenges for the broch's builders in establishing secure foundations for the structure's distinctive thick, hollow-walled design. Brochs of this type, concentrated in northern Scotland, typically date to the late first millennium BC and represent sophisticated architectural achievements, their inturned entrances and internal galleries serving both defensive and domestic purposes.
