Overview

History & significance

Allt Bidein an Tighearna is a post-medieval shieling settlement located on the Isle of Eigg in Inverness-shire, Scotland. The site comprises a cluster of stone-built structures and associated enclosures typical of Highland pastoral settlements, which were seasonally occupied during the summer months for cattle herding and dairy production. Dating to the post-medieval period, the shielings represent evidence of transhumance practises whereby communities moved livestock to upland or remote pastures during the grazing season. The physical remains, including the characteristic low stone walls and hut circles, reflect the temporary yet organised nature of these pastoral settlements within the Hebridean landscape.
