The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius in the mid-second century AD, approximately 142-143 AD. This section, located in Lanarkshire near Buchley, forms part of the wall's eastern reaches and represents the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent. The structure comprises a turf rampart built upon a stone foundation, standing originally to a considerable height, with a ditch system on its northern face designed to impede approach. This particular stretch preserves evidence of the wall's engineering standard and contributes to the broader archaeological understanding of Roman Scotland's defensive infrastructure.
