Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall, Antonine Road to Rosslyn Road is a Roman road forming part of the supply and communication network associated with the Antonine Wall frontier system in Scotland. Dating to the mid-second century AD, the road served to connect garrisons and facilitate the movement of troops and provisions across the Dunbartonshire landscape during the period of Roman occupation north of Hadrian's Wall. The road follows a traceable route aligned to Roman engineering principles typical of the period, though its physical remains survive variably across the landscape. This infrastructure was integral to the operation and maintenance of the Antonine Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain, which operated during the reign of Antoninus Pius from approximately AD 142 to 163.
