Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall, Cleddans Burn to Peel Glen Road, is a section of the turf and stone frontier fortification constructed by the Roman Empire in Scotland during the second century AD. Built under the direction of the governor Quintus Lollius Urbicus around 142 AD, this stretch represents part of the approximately 60-kilometre defensive line extending across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. The monument comprises the characteristic ditch and rampart construction typical of the Antonine Wall, with the turf superstructure supported by a stone base, positioned in Dunbartonshire as part of the wall's western sector. This section of the wall remained in use for approximately twenty years before Roman forces withdrew to Hadrian's Wall to the south, making it one of the northernmost permanent frontier installations of the Roman Empire.
