Overview

History & significance

Antonine Wall, Peel Glen Road to Castlehill is a section of the Roman frontier fortification constructed during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius in the second century AD. This segment of the wall, located in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, forms part of the turf-built rampart that extended approximately 37 miles across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. The wall's physical structure comprised a substantial earthwork defence, typically featuring a broad base and considerable height, constructed from turf and stone. This particular section represents evidence of one of Rome's northernmost permanent frontiers, occupied intermittently during the second century before the Romans eventually withdrew to Hadrian's Wall further south.
