Overview

History & significance

Arbourseats Veins and Sough, Wardlow Sough, Nay Green Mine and Washing Floors, Hading Vein and Seedlow Rake is a group of lead and fluorspar mining sites in Derbyshire dating from the medieval period through to the post-medieval and industrial eras. The complex comprises multiple veins and associated infrastructure including soughs (drainage adits), mines, and washing floors that represent successive phases of mineral extraction across several centuries. The sites demonstrate the long history of lead mining in the Derbyshire lead field, with the soughs in particular representing significant engineering works undertaken to facilitate deeper mining by draining water from the workings. These remains preserve important evidence of medieval and later mining technology and the evolution of mineral extraction methods in one of England's principal lead-producing regions.
