Auchope is a scooped homestead located approximately eighty metres north-west of Auchope in Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders. The site comprises a dwelling platform cut into the hillside, a characteristic constructional method employed during the later prehistoric and early historic periods in Scotland. The scooped or sunken nature of the homestead would have provided shelter and insulation whilst reducing the labour required for structural building. Such settlements are typically dated to the Iron Age through to the early medieval period, though precise chronology for individual sites often remains uncertain without excavation.
