Ayr Fort Gate is a seventeenth-century defensive structure forming part of the fortifications constructed at Ayr in response to Civil War and Interregnum military pressures. The gate, now incorporated into the streetscape at Nos.2 and 2A Montgomerie Terrace, represents a surviving fragment of the fort's perimeter defences and retains evidence of its original defensive function. The structure dates from the period when Ayr, as a strategically significant coastal settlement, required strengthened military works. It remains an important material testament to the town's Civil War fortifications and the architectural legacy of seventeenth-century Scottish military engineering.
