Ballykinler is a World War One trench system and World War Two grenade bunker situated in County Down, Northern Ireland. The entrenchment survives as a tangible record of two distinct periods of modern conflict on Irish soil. Excavated into Paleozoic sedimentary bedrock of Early Carboniferous age, the site demonstrates how military engineers adapted to local geology when constructing defensive positions. The trench lines reflect the strategic thinking of the First World War, when similar systems were dug across the Western Front and in training areas throughout Britain and Ireland.
The addition of a grenade bunker during the Second World War shows how the site was refortified in response to changing military circumstances and perceived invasion threats. Such structures were common features of coastal and inland defences across Northern Ireland during 1939–1945. The bunker would have provided protected storage and deployment positions for anti-personnel grenades.
The monument is protected by the Historic Environment Division under reference 16491, recognising its archaeological and historical significance as evidence of twentieth-century military history and engineering practice on the island of Ireland.
