Balmaclellan Motte is a motte and bailey earthwork located in Kirkcudbrightshire in south-western Scotland. The monument consists of an artificial mound, characteristic of Norman military architecture, which dates to the medieval period, likely the 12th century. The motte would have served as a defensive stronghold for a Norman or Anglo-Norman lord, representing the type of fortification established following the Norman influence in Scotland during the High Middle Ages. The site survives as an earthwork monument and provides evidence of the feudal settlement patterns and military control systems imposed across southern Scotland during the medieval period.
