St John's Town of Dalry motte is a medieval earthwork fortification located in Kirkcudbrightshire, south-western Scotland. The monument consists of a substantial mound of earth and stone typical of twelfth-century motte-and-bailey castles, which formed the primary defensive structures established by Norman and Anglo-Norman lords throughout Britain during the early medieval period. The motte at Dalry represents an important example of early medieval military architecture in the region, demonstrating the spread of feudal settlement patterns and lordly authority in south-western Scotland during the High Middle Ages. Such earthwork fortifications were typically built rapidly and required minimal masonry, serving as effective strongholds for controlling local territories and populations before the construction of more elaborate stone castles became commonplace in later centuries.
