Balnacarn township, located 550 metres west-southwest of the designated point in Inverness-shire, is an ancient settlement whose physical remains reflect the long occupation of this Highland landscape. The site comprises the characteristic turf-built structures typical of Scottish pre-improvement rural settlement, with evidence of dwelling platforms and associated outbuildings arranged within the township boundary. The settlement likely dates from the medieval period through to the early modern era, representing a form of communal agricultural settlement that remained common in the Highlands until the eighteenth century. Such townships formed the basis of Highland subsistence farming and pastoral economies before the landscape transformations brought about by agricultural improvement and the Highland Clearances.
