Fort Augustus–Bernera military road 570m south-east of Achlain is a length of an eighteenth-century drove and military road that survives as an earthwork in the upland terrain of Inverness-shire. The route served both civilian traffic and military purposes during the period of Highland development following the 1746 Jacobite rising, when improved communications became strategic priorities across the region. The road is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland.
The monument lies on the Loch Eil Group psammite bedrock, which provides the metamorphic foundation of this moorland landscape. The survival of the road as an earthwork here reflects the combination of the underlying geology and the local topography, where the route follows the natural contours of the terrain between the Fort Augustus garrison and the Bernera settlements.
