Blackbraes Coke Ovens, Muiravonside is a scheduled monument in Stirlingshire that represents the industrial heritage of Scotland's coalfield landscapes. Located on bedrock of the Scottish Coal Measures Group, the site exploited the natural geology formed during the Moscovian period, when alternating layers of mudstone, siltstone, sandstone and coal accumulated in ancient deltaic environments. The presence of coal seams and ironstone in the underlying strata made this location strategically valuable for nineteenth-century industrial development.
Coke ovens were essential installations in the expansion of iron production and gas manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. At Muiravonside, the ovens processed local coal into coke, a purer fuel required for smelting iron ore and generating town gas. The ferricrete and ironstone deposits within the Coal Measures would have attracted both mining and metallurgical industries to this locality.
The monument is protected by Historic Environment Scotland under scheduled monument designation SM4329, recognising its significance as evidence of Scotland's industrial past. The remains preserve important information about nineteenth-century fuel processing and the relationship between geology, resource extraction and manufacturing in the central belt coalfield region.
