Broomknowe is a post-medieval enclosure situated 200 metres west of the settlement at Broomknowe in Angus, Scotland. The monument represents a phase of rural land organisation and management that characterised the Scottish countryside from the sixteenth century onwards, when improved farming practices and changing land tenure encouraged the formalisation of field boundaries and stock containment areas. Such enclosures typically reflect the development of more intensive and controlled agricultural regimes across lowland and mixed farming regions of eastern Scotland during this period.
The enclosure occupies ground underlain by sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone of the Arbuthnott-Garvock Group, rocks formed during the Pragian period of the Early Devonian. This ancient bedrock, weathered and worked by successive generations of farmers, would have profoundly shaped the character of the landscape and the practical challenges of monument construction and maintenance across the surrounding terrain.
