Bryn-Derwen Mound and Bailey Castle is a motte and bailey fortification located in Wales and designated as a scheduled ancient monument under the Cadw reference MG054. The site consists of an earthwork defensive structure typical of Norman and post-Conquest fortifications, comprising a raised mound with an associated baileys that would have provided medieval military control of the surrounding territory. Such motte and bailey castles were commonly established in Wales during the eleventh and twelfth centuries as instruments of Norman expansion and settlement, though many were subsequently superseded by stone fortifications or abandoned as political circumstances changed. The earthwork remains at Bryn-Derwen preserve evidence of this important phase of medieval military architecture and settlement in Wales.
