Buaile Oscar is a Neolithic fort and chambered cairn located on Beinn Freiceadain in Caithness, Scotland. The monument sits on bedrock of Middle Old Red Sandstone, a geological formation dating to the Middle Devonian period, comprising conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone. This substantial geology provided both building material and a stable foundation for the monument's construction in the third millennium before Christ.
The site combines two complementary Neolithic structures: a fort with defensive characteristics and a chambered cairn serving ritual or burial purposes. Such dual-function sites were significant focal points in Neolithic communities, suggesting Buaile Oscar held importance for both practical settlement and ceremonial life.
