Burneside Hall is a pele tower and gatehouse complex located in Westmorland, dating from the medieval period when such fortified structures were constructed throughout the Anglo-Scottish border regions and northern England. The pele tower represents the characteristic defensive architecture of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, designed to provide secure refuge and protection for the resident family and their moveable goods during periods of border unrest and raiding. The associated gatehouse forms part of a defensive enclosure typical of fortified domestic sites of this era, combining practical security functions with the residence of a substantial landholding family. The survival of both structures at Burneside demonstrates the importance of the site as a minor stronghold within the settlement hierarchy of medieval Westmorland.
