Overview

History & significance

Burnswark Hill is an Iron Age fort located in Dumfriesshire, south-west Scotland, situated on a prominent hilltop that rises steeply from the surrounding landscape. The fort itself dates to the Iron Age and is defined by multiple ramparts enclosing the summit, representing a significant prehistoric defensive settlement in the region. Of particular archaeological importance are the two Roman camps positioned on the slopes immediately adjacent to the fort, evidence of Roman military operations against the native settlement during the campaigns of the first and second centuries AD. The juxtaposition of the Iron Age fort with these Roman siege camps provides rare physical testimony to direct Roman-native contact and conflict in Scotland during the period of Roman occupation.
