History & significance

Caen Long Cairn and Round Cairn is a Neolithic funerary monument complex located in Sutherland, Scotland, comprising two distinct cairn structures positioned approximately 470 and 490 metres west of Caen. The long cairn represents the characteristic burial architecture of the earlier Neolithic period, whilst the associated round cairn reflects later prehistoric funerary practice and suggests reuse or successive phases of activity at this location. The monument group demonstrates the continuity and evolution of ritual and burial traditions across the Neolithic period in northern Scotland. As a scheduled monument, the site preserves important evidence for understanding settlement patterns, mortuary practices, and landscape use in the far north during the prehistoric era.
