Caerleon Civil Settlement: Area under Broadway Playing Fields is a Roman civil settlement situated beneath the modern playing fields in Caerleon, Monmouthshire, and represents part of the extramural settlement that developed outside the fortress of Isca Augustorum during the Roman occupation of Wales. The site dates to the Roman period, particularly the later first and second centuries AD, when it would have accommodated traders, craftspeople, and families associated with the military installation. Archaeological evidence suggests the settlement contained residential structures and evidence of domestic and commercial activity characteristic of vici, the unplanned settlements that grew around major Roman forts. The archaeological remains lie buried beneath the present-day playing fields, preserving important stratified deposits that contribute to understanding the civilian economy and social organisation of Roman Wales beyond the fortress walls.
