Caerleon Legionary Fortress is a Roman legionary fortress of the later first century AD, situated in south-east Wales near the confluence of the Usk and Afon Llwyd rivers. The fortress served as the permanent base of the Second Augustan Legion and represents one of the three major legionary establishments in Roman Britain, alongside those at Chester and York. The site preserves substantial archaeological remains including the amphitheatre, barracks, and other structural features that demonstrate the scale and organisation of Roman military occupation in Wales. The fortress remained in military use until the early third century and has yielded considerable epigraphic and material evidence documenting Roman administrative and military life in the province.
