Overview

History & significance

Caerleon Legionary Fortress is a Roman military installation of the late first century AD, established at Isca Silurum in South Wales as a permanent base for the Second Augustan Legion. The fortress occupied approximately fifty acres on Goldcroft Common and other nearby areas, commanding the River Usk and serving as a crucial administrative and military centre for the subjugation and control of the Welsh interior and border regions. The site preserves substantial archaeological evidence including the plan of the fortress defences, internal buildings, and the amphitheatre, though much lies beneath modern Caerleon. The fortress remained in occupation until the early third century AD, when Roman military priorities shifted northwards, leaving behind one of the finest examples of a Roman legionary fortress in Britain.
