Caerleon Legionary Fortress is a Roman legionary fortress established in south-east Wales during the late first century AD, likely founded around AD 75 under the Roman governor Frontinus. The fortress served as a permanent base for the Second Augustan Legion and represents one of only three legionary fortresses in Roman Britain, making it a site of considerable strategic and military importance. The School Fields area comprises substantial archaeological remains including the principia (headquarters building), barrack blocks, and defensive ditches, which demonstrate the characteristic planning and construction of a Roman military installation. The fortress remained in active use throughout the second century AD and continued to be occupied into the early third century, constituting a major centre of Roman military administration in the western frontier region of Roman Britain.
