Corpach Locks and Basin is a component of the Caledonian Canal, a major waterway engineering project begun in 1803 and substantially completed by 1822, designed to provide a navigable passage across Scotland from the Atlantic to the North Sea. Located at Corpach in Argyllshire near Fort William, the locks and basin represent the western terminus of the canal and exemplify early nineteenth-century civil engineering practice. The locks themselves manage the significant tidal range of Loch Linnhe and provide access to the canal system proper, whilst the basin serves as a harbour facility for vessels entering or leaving the canal. The structure remains substantially intact from its original construction period and continues to function as part of the operational canal system.
