Overview

History & significance

Caledonian Canal is a navigational waterway constructed in the early nineteenth century to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the North Sea across the Scottish Highlands. Dochgarroch Lock and Muirtown Locks form part of the canal's eastern approach near Inverness, representing significant feats of civil engineering from Thomas Telford's original design and construction between 1803 and 1822. These locks were built to manage the considerable change in water level and to facilitate passage of vessels through the canal system, which incorporated both natural lochs and purpose-built channels. The locks remain functional structures integral to the canal's operation and represent an important example of early nineteenth-century Scottish industrial infrastructure.
