Caledonian Canal, Moy Bridge to Gairlochy, is a section of the major canal system constructed in the Scottish Highlands between 1803 and 1822. Designed by Thomas Telford and built under the direction of the Commissioners for the Highland Roads and Bridges, this portion of the canal connects Loch Lochy with the lower reaches of the system, incorporating a series of locks and associated structures typical of early nineteenth-century canal engineering. The canal was conceived as a strategic commercial waterway to reduce shipping times between the east and west coasts of Scotland and to stimulate economic development in the Highlands. The physical infrastructure reflects Telford's engineering principles, with masonry lock chambers, embankments, and approach works constructed to accommodate contemporary vessels and facilitate Highland trade.
