Calfield is a post-medieval scooped settlement and farmstead located in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, situated 440 metres north of the village. The monument exemplifies the distinctive settlement pattern of rural Scotland in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, when families established their homes by partially excavating into sloping ground to provide shelter and drainage. This building technique, known as scooping, created distinctive hollow platforms visible across the Scottish landscape, particularly in areas of mixed agriculture and pastoral farming.
The site lies upon bedrock of the Riccarton Group, a formation of wacke sandstone dating to the Wenlock period of the Silurian era. This underlying geology shaped both the settlement's location and construction methods, as the relatively soft rock would have been amenable to the excavation required for the scooped platforms, whilst the stone itself provided material for building walls and structures that often survive as low banks and rubble spreads.
The settlement remains visible as earthworks across the landscape, protected by Historic Environment Scotland under the reference SM12700.
