Broomholm is a post-medieval farmstead situated 400 metres east of Broomholm in Dumfriesshire, south-west Scotland. The site occupies land underlain by sandstone, siltstone and mudstone of the Inverclyde Group, sedimentary rocks deposited during the Osagean period of the Carboniferous era. These local stone types would have provided readily available building material for the farmstead's construction and dry stone walls.
The farmstead represents the agricultural settlement pattern characteristic of rural Dumfriesshire from the sixteenth century onwards, when improved farming methods and land organisation transformed the Scottish borders. Such farmsteads typically comprised a domestic dwelling, farm buildings and associated enclosures arranged to manage livestock and arable production on modest holdings.
