Carrawburgh Roman fort is a cavalry and infantry installation built during the second century AD as part of the Hadrianic frontier system in northern Britain. The fort occupies a position on the north side of Hadrian's Wall in the parish of Halton, Northumberland, and controlled the important Stanegate route beneath the wall line. The vallum, the linear earthwork running parallel to the wall and demarcating the military zone, survives in the designated area between the field boundaries, representing the administrative boundary of the fort's hinterland. The site retains significant archaeological potential, with structural remains including those of the fort's principal buildings, together with the well sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Coventina, which has yielded votive deposits indicating sustained religious observance throughout the Roman occupation period.
