Castle Earthworks is a post-medieval enclosure situated 500 metres south-south-west of Mains of Greenlaw in Kirkcudbrightshire, south-western Scotland. The monument consists of earthwork remains that define an enclosed area, typical of the defensive or administrative structures built across the region during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. These enclosures often served practical purposes for settlement protection, stock management, or the demarcation of significant landholdings during a period of considerable social and economic change in the Scottish Borders and surrounding regions.
The site lies upon bedrock of the Hawick Group, a formation of wacke sandstone and siltstone deposited during the Wenlock period of the Silurian era, some 430 million years ago. This hard, weathered geology would have provided the natural foundation for construction and contributed to the survival of the earthwork features visible today.
